Why Translation Is Not the Best Way to Learn a Language
When we start learning a foreign language, one of the most common habits is translating every word into our native language. Although translation can sometimes be helpful, depending on it too much can slow down our learning process.
Learning a language is not just about knowing the meaning of words; it is about learning how to think, understand, and express ourselves in that language.
For example, when we hear a word in English, we often translate it into Persian before understanding it. Then, when we want to speak, we think in Persian, translate our thoughts into English, and finally say the sentence. This process takes time and can make speaking less natural.
Instead, we should gradually train our brains to think directly in the language we are learning. We can start with simple things, such as naming objects around us, describing our daily activities, or talking to ourselves in that language. For example, instead of thinking about the Persian meaning of the word *apple*, we can imagine an apple and connect the word directly to the object.
Another useful way is to watch videos, listen to podcasts, read short stories, and practise speaking without translating every sentence. At first, it might feel difficult, and we may not understand everything. However, making mistakes and learning from them are important parts of the journey.
Of course, translation is not always wrong. It can help us understand difficult words or complicated ideas, especially when we are beginners. The important thing is not to let translation become our only way of understanding a foreign language.
Remember, the goal is not simply to translate your thoughts into another language. The goal is to express those thoughts naturally and confidently.
So, the next time you learn a new word, don't just ask yourself, "What does this mean in my language?" Try asking, "How can I understand and use this word directly?"
Little by little, with regular practice and patience, you can teach your brain to think in the language you are learning. And that is when learning a language starts to feel more natural!
