Irregular Nouns

What Are Irregular Nouns?

Most English nouns become plural by adding -s or -es. For example:

* Book → Books

* Box → Boxes

* Watch → Watches

But some nouns don't follow these rules. They change in different ways when we talk about more than one. These are called irregular nouns.

Common Irregular Nouns

Here are some common examples you should know:

| Singular | Plural |

| -------- | -------- |

| Child | Children |

| Man | Men |

| Woman | Women |

| Person | People |

| Foot | Feet |

| Tooth | Teeth |

| Mouse | Mice |

| Goose | Geese |

| Ox | Oxen |

Nouns Ending in -f or -fe

Some nouns that end in -f or -fe change their endings to -ves when we make them plural.

| Singular | Plural |

| -------- | ------- |

| Wolf | Wolves |

| Leaf | Leaves |

| Life | Lives |

| Knife | Knives |

| Wife | Wives |

| Shelf | Shelves |

| Half | Halves |

| Calf | Calves |

| Loaf | Loaves |

| Thief | Thieves |

Examples in Sentences

* The wolf is in the forest. → The wolves are in the forest.

* A leaf fell from the tree. → Many leaves fell from the tree.

* This knife is sharp. → These knives are sharp.

* Her life is interesting. → Their lives are interesting.

Be Careful!

Not all nouns ending in -f or -fe change to -ves. Some simply take -s.

| Singular | Plural |

| -------- | ------- |

| Roof | Roofs |

| Chef | Chefs |

| Cliff | Cliffs |

| Belief | Beliefs |

Remember that there are exceptions, so it's helpful to learn the plural forms of common nouns as you meet them.

Nouns That Don't Change

Some nouns have the same form in both singular and plural.

| Singular | Plural |

| -------- | ------- |

| Sheep | Sheep |

| Deer | Deer |

| Fish | Fish |

| Species | Species |

Examples:

* I saw one sheep in the field.

* I saw five sheep in the field.

* There is a deer in the forest.

* There are three deer in the forest.

 Final Tip

Irregular nouns don't follow the usual plural rules, so the best way to learn them is to practise them regularly. Pay special attention to nouns that change completely, nouns that stay the same, and nouns that change -f or -fe to -ves.

Little by little, you'll use them naturally and confidently!
